screenshoots TVBagi kebanyakan musisi, bergabung dengan perusahaan rekaman besar umumnya menjadi pilihan jalan terbaik untuk mencapai puncak prestasi. Melalui major label, kemudahan meraih ketenaran yang berujung pada datangnya kemudahan finansial, menjadi pandangan mainstream. Meskipun kemudian, ada sejumlah kompromi yang harus dijalankan. Namun bagaimana dengan pemikiran para musisi indie?
Bagi grup band seperti White Shoes & The Couples Company (WSTCC), SORE, Goodnight Electric dan Frau, hujan uang bukanlah tujuan akhir. Bagi mereka, bermain musik harus sesuai dengan hati dan jiwa mereka. Kebebasan bereksrepsi lewat musik dan lagu kesukaan mereka, tidak dapat ditukar dengan uang sekalipun.

Siapa yang masih meragukan musikalitas WSTCC? Band yang konsisten dengan kombinasi gaya tampilan dan genre musik pop Indonesia tahun 70-an, jazz tahun 30-an serta sedikit aroma disko ini, telah malang melintang di dunia musik indie selama kurang lebih 7 tahun. Berbagai penghargaan dari dalam dan luar negeri telah mereka raih. Juga pentas di berbagai panggung musik nasional dan internasional telah mereka lakukan berkali-kali. Pujian dari sejumlah media resensi musik besar dunia pun, sering mereka dapatkan. Namun mereka tak segera jua merapat ke perusahaan rekaman besar atau major label. Sekalinya ditawari, mereka mundur teratur. Apa pasal? Ternyata karena mereka tak mau “disetir” oleh keinginan pihak major label untuk memainkan aliran yang berdasar pertimbangan bisnis komersil. “Bermain musik tidak boleh dengan perasaan terkekang, kami tak bisa seperti itu. Kami ingin bebas lepas memainkan idealisme kami dalam bermusik” cetus Sari, vokalis WSTCC.

Senada dengan WSTCC, grup bang SORE pun menyatakan hal serupa. Band yang album pertamanya Centralismo, mendapatkan pengakuan sebagai 5 album layak dimiliki oleh majalah Time Asia ini, lebih memilih bergabung dengan indie label. Bagi mereka, ada ruang kebebasan berekspresi yang mereka dapatkan di perusahaan rekaman indie. Band yang memainkan gabungan pop, rock dan jazz retro ini, teguh bertahan pada komitmen aliran musik mereka dari awal hingga kini. Meski dengan resiko, tak tenar-tenar amat di pasar musik mainstream Indonesia. Padahal secara kualitas bermusik, SORE telah mendapatkan pengakuan sebagai band terpuji oleh sekian banyak media resensi musik. Ada satu hal yang unik. Kenapa mereka memainkan alat musik dengan tangan kiri, padahal tak satupun dari mereka kidal?

Sementara bagi Goodnight Electric, pilihan musik mereka yang tak lazim di pasar Indonesia, tak menyurutkan niat mereka untuk terus berkarya. Musik synthpop atau gabungan antara pop dan elektronika, memang bukan selera semua orang. Album pertama trio pemain synthesizer dan komputer ini, “dilecehkan” berbagai kalangan. Namun siapa sangka, mereka mendapatkan pengakuan dari majalah Time Asia sebagai salah satu dari 5 band yang performanya layak disimak. Bahkan mereka menjadi band Asia yang populer di Jerman, setelah 3 kali manggung di negeri Bavaria tersebut.

Sedangkan dari Jogja, seorang gadis belia mulai menggebrak panggung musik indie nasional lewat harmoni kord-kord piano elektriknya. Frau, pianis solo berdarah campuran Jogja- Jepang Hawaii telah membuat kagum banyak penikmat musik bawah tanah. Lewat sejumlah performa gabungan piano dengan teater atau seni pantomim, Frau dipuji banyak pengamat musik indie sebagai new rising star di musik indie. Frau sendiri juga tidak segan-segan menyebarluaskan karya musiknya secara gratis melalui internet. Baginya, bermusik adalah media penyaluran hobi sekaligus wujud aktualisasi diri, yang tak bisa dibatasi oleh tuntutan-tuntutan atas nama bisnis komersil.

Dukungan terhadap para musisi “pemberontak” ini, datang salah satunya dari produsen motor, Yamaha. Melalui ajang kompetisi musik indie “Free Your Soul”, Yamaha rutin menggelar hajatan ini setiap tahun. Dan tahun ini adalah tahun yang ketiga. Respon besar datang dari berbagai daerah. Lebih dari 600 band indie mengikuti ajang kompetisi tahun ini. Dan hasilnya, 3 band idealis pengusung musik-musik berbagai aliran non-mainstream terpilih. Siapa sajakah mereka? Seperti apakah kualitas bermusik mereka hingga terpilih sebagai band indie terbaik versi kompetisi “Free Your Soul”? Bagaimana pula atraktivitas penampilan White Shoes & The Couples Company, SORE, Goodnight Electric dan Frau? Jangan sampai ketinggalan episode Kick Andy pekan ini!

Strokes' Julian Casablancas announces extra London gig and ticket details

The StrokesJulian Casablancas has announced a new date on his debut solo tour, which is set to hit the UK in December.

Casablancas, whose solo album ‘Phrazes For The Young’ was released on Monday (November 2), will play an additional date at London’s HMV Forum on December 15. Tickets are on sale now.

The singer-songwriter will headline ULU on February 24 following a previously announced set of November dates, which kick off in Glasgow on November 9.

Regan is set to release a new album, ‘The Shadow Of An Empire’, in February next year. The album sees him moving on from his previous acoustic leanings to incorporate more electric instruments.

Reverend And The Makers for London Club NME NYE Ball

Reverend And The Makers are set to headline the Club NME New Year’s Eve Ball at London’s Koko venue on December 31.

The band will be joined by Example and Ou Est Le Swimming Pool for the bash. Jeff Automatic and Ed Wilder will DJ.

He announces a rough schedule for his three-day exhibition in Shoreditch

Jarvis Cocker has announced a rough schedule for his three-day exhibition in London, which is set to kick off today (November 9).

Cocker is setting up shop in Shoreditch’s Village Underground venue for three days, where he will be joined by yoga classes, a pole-dancing workshop and a circus troupe, among others. He’s also asking passing musicians to bring instruments to turn up and have a jam with him and his band.

The event will culminate with a solo gig from Cocker and his band, to take place on Wednesday night at 9pm at the venue.

The Courteeners have announced details of an intimate warm-up gig to take place two days before their homecoming show at the Manchester Central venue on December 11.

In preparation for the gig, Liam Fray and co will also play Warrington Parr Hall on December 9, with tickets going on sale tomorrow morning (November 10) at 10am (GMT).

Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club, Big Pink, Drums for Shockwaves NME Awards Tour

The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Big Pink and The Drums are set to head out on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2010, NME.COM can announce.

The four bands will comprise next year’s line-up, with the 14-date run kicking off on February 4 at the Newcastle O2 Academy and wrapping up at the O2 Academy Brixton in London on February 20.

The Maccabees’ Felix White told NME.COM that he was looking forward to heading up the tour, having been a regular at past NME Awards tours.

“I remember me and Hugo [White, guitarist], went to the Bloc Party, Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs tour [in 2005, which also featured The Killers],” he said. “We were like, ‘Shit, that’s how it’s done’.

“I remember being ridiculously excited about The Futureheads. That was a time when the possibility of what you could do with your mates and guitars, realising how you did that and it being achievable, became real. Those tours put that in front of you.”
